The Ritual

The Difference Between A Routine And A Ritual

By Layla Nassar · 5 minute read · 5 June 2026

Five minutes, done with intention, changes what the other twenty-three hours and fifty-five feel like.

A routine is a sequence you complete. A ritual is a sequence you attend to. The steps can be identical; what separates them is whether your mind is in the room while your hands are working.

This is not a semantic distinction. Practically, it changes the outcome. People who oil their hair as a routine tend to use too little, rush the scalp, and stop after three weeks because nothing visible happened. People who treat it as a ritual tend to keep going, and keeping going is the entire mechanism.

Consistency is not discipline. It is enjoyment, repeated.

How to make the shift

Warm the oil first. It takes fifteen seconds between the palms and it changes the whole experience — the temperature is what tells your body this is care rather than maintenance. Then start at the scalp, not the ends, and use the pads of the fingers in slow circles rather than scratching.

Set the phone down. Not for wellness reasons — because you will do a worse job with one hand. Section the hair, take the length in parts, and finish with a comb rather than a brush.

Five unhurried minutes, two or three nights a week. That is the whole practice. What makes it work is that you look forward to it.
