The Hands That Taught Us

By Nour Haddad · 8 minute read · 2 May 2026

Four members on who first oiled their hair for them, and what they remember of it.

We asked members of the Royal Circle a single question: who taught you this? Almost nobody named a brand, a video, or an article. They named a person, and usually a room.

She never called it a treatment. She called it Thursday.

What came up again and again

The smell before the method. The heat of the oil in someone else's palms. Sitting on the floor while someone sat on the chair behind you. The comb, always at the end, always slower than you wanted.

Several people described relearning it as adults and finding the technique easy and the patience hard — which tracks. The method was never the difficult part.
